Broadening Horizons

Outdoor Education

Our Outdoor Education programme is ideally situated with the beautiful, rolling Cotswold Hills and countryside on our doorstep, offering plenty of opportunities for activities in the outdoors. The Forest of Dean is only a short drive away, while the wild countryside of Wales offers scope for the more adventurous.

There is a wide range of outdoor activities on offer at CLC. Some of these activities take place during curriculum time and some run as clubs such as the weekend Adventure Club – open to all ages. This offers a full programme of activities such as mountain-biking and orienteering.

The extensive curriculum ensures that every girl in LC3 follows a programme in orienteering and leadership challenge, whilst canoeing and rock climbing are additional options for both LC3 and UC5. Members of the sixth form have the opportunity to take part in dry slope skiing, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and rock climbing.

Canoeing

Canoeing is a popular element of the Outdoor Pursuits programme at College. It is taught as part of the options programme in the curriculum for LC3, UC4/5 plus weekly club for all year groups. During the summer term trips to places such as the Forest of Dean take place on Saturday afternoons. There is canoeing as part of the LC3 Camp, in the summer term.

Climbing

Climbing is a popular element of the Outdoor Pursuits programme at College. It is taught as part of the options programme in the curriculum for LC3's. There are also climbing trips organised on some Saturday afternoons throughout the school year, where girls go to Gloucester climbing wall and the Forest of Dean . There is also a chance to take part in climbing and abseiling on the LC3 Camp.

Orienteering

Orienteering is taught as part of the Outdoor Pursuits programme in the curriculum for LC3's. The girls learn a variety of map and compass skills as well as how to accurately judge distances over differing terrain. There is an inter house orienteering competition during the summer term, and girls also take part in orienteering during the LC3 camp.

Problem Solving

Problem solving is taught as part of the Outdoor Pursuits programme in the curriculum for LC3's. It is an excellent activity for encouraging team work and developing communication skills.

Sailing

Sailing is offered as part of the options programme in the summer term for girls in UC5 upwards. Lessons are organised for girls at a local water park. There is also a sailing and windsurfing club which meets once a week during the summer term. This club is open to girls of all ages and ability.

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is a popular activity at College. Girls can participate in ‘try-dives' in the College swimming pool and, if they enjoy the experience, they can follow a PADI Open Water diving qualification. There are also diving trips organised to different open water locations both in land and off the coast of Britain .

Skiing

There are opportunities to take part in both skiing and dry slope skiing at College. Trips to a local dry ski slope are organised at the weekends and there are also skiing trips abroad during the Easter holidays. The most recent skiing trips have been to France and Canada.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is offered as part of the options programme in the summer term for girls in UC5 upwards. Lessons are organised for girls at a local water park. There is also a windsurfing and sailing club which meets once a week during the summer term. This club is open to girls of all ages and ability.
