Junior Boarding Houses

Farnley Lodge

Exterior of building

Farnley Lodge, opened in 1882, is one of College's older houses. It moved to its current location in Douro Road in 1955, formerly a refurbished boys' preparatory school. Girls were very impressed at the time and a report in the College magazine boasted that "the labour-saving gadgets and devices are too many to describe". Like all houses, Farnley today is still kept up-to-date and girls enjoy a comfortable boarding life.

  • How to describe the girls of Farnley Lodge?

Loyal, compassionate, self-motivated, full of team spirit, fun loving.

  • What is it like to join Farnley Lodge?

When I first arrived I was welcomed with warm smiles. I found everyone helpful and understanding when we had problems. College was quite daunting because everything was quite big and I was quite small, but it soon changed and I became used to everything. I found arriving at Farnley quite like cooking a new recipe - you don't know what goes first although you know that if you stay calm, everything will come out perfectly!

  • Housemistress

housemistressI became Housemistress of Farnley Lodge in 1988 and have been happily ensconced here ever since. I have worked in boarding schools all my working life and my husband still teaches in a prep school locally. Over the years I have been here there have been many changes, but the Houses remain happy and exciting communities in which to live and to make friendships that will last a life time.
