Sixth Form Boarding Houses

Elizabeth

Exterior of building

Elizabeth House was designed in 1960 by the College architect Brian Tait, although it was known as ‘Cambray’ until 1982. The site once held the boarding house called ‘Bayshill Lawn’ which was purchased by College in 1883.  However this building was destroyed by a German bomb in 1940. Fortunately it was empty at the time as all its staff had been requisitioned by the War Office and the boarders had been temporarily accommodated elsewhere. The present building contains 60 individual study bedrooms for sixth form girls.

Gransden House was purchased by College in 2007 from the former Carlton Hotel. The 10 twin bedded rooms with ensuite facilities were retained but it was entirely redecorated and refurbished and provides an excellent standard of accommodation for 20 sixth form girls.

  • Words to describe the House

Caring, supportive and friendly.

  • Housemistress

housemistressI have been Housemistress of Elizabeth since September 2001 and of Gransden, too, since September 2007.  I am married to an Anglican priest and have four grown up children (two daughters and two sons) and four grandchildren (all boys!).  I have enjoyed a long career combining both teaching and pastoral experience in a variety of situations  including Headington School, Oxford, Aldershot Girls’ Grammar School, St Mary’s School, Wantage, Gresham’s School, Holt, Hethersett Old Hall School, Norwich and St Helen and St Katharine’s School, Abingdon – before  joining CLC in 1997.  I am also a member of the Religious Studies department and very much enjoy teaching a variety of age groups in College.  My House staff and I are committed to ensuring that an atmosphere of  reciprocal trust is created between us and the girls in our care, providing both a ‘halfway house’ to the university experience  to which they will all go on if they choose and a sense of responsibility which will stand them in good stead throughout their life.
