PHYSICAL EDUCATION

It has been another successful year for College’s sports teams. The winter games of hockey, netball and lacrosse are as popular as ever and all age groups have worked hard to obtain some excellent results.

The hockey teams found themselves quickly in the thick of things with a pre-season tournament win for the 1XI at the Rugby School Tournament followed a few weeks later with victory in the County round of the National Schools tournament. Representing Gloucestershire in the West round of the Tournament the U18 side played a number of exciting games and finished 5th. The U16s reached the semi-final stage of their County Tournament, losing out to Cheltenham College on penalty strokes. A special mention must go to Issy Davies who gained selection for U16 England and Midlands as Goalkeeper. A further fourteen girls were selected for County and one for the South West.

The U14 Netball team retained the title of County Champions, and was joined by the U16 team who also took county honours. Representing Gloucestershire in the Regional Netball Tournament, both the U14 and U16 CLC teams put in great performances. The U16 team were placed third in their section. The U14 team met Millfield School in the semi-final. In a closely contested game Millfield edged away to win. In the third and fourth place playoff against Godolphin School, CLC took control and won, narrowly missing out on the chance to go to the Nationals, a fantastic achievement.

Freddie Chidi-Ofong was selected for the Netball High Performance programme and five of our junior Netball players successfully trialled for the Satellite Netball Centre of Development and received further coaching and the opportunity to trial for the County Netball teams.

Lacrosse has had another highly successful year with four girls selected to represent their countries; Katrina Baxter, Scotland U19, Sarah Murray, Wales U19, Harriet Newton, England U19. They found themselves playing each other in the Home Internationals in March. Cecelia Roos was selected to attend final trials to play for Sweden in the World Cup to be played in Prague this summer. The U15s were winners of the second division in the West Schools Tournament and finished their season in the top 12 schools in the country after Nationals.

Thirty six girls and four staff travelled to the East Coast of USA for two exciting weeks of lacrosse. Two teams played 7 matches as well as enjoying lots of sighting seeing. Both teams played exceptionally well. All the players improved their game, learning from their American hosts. The A team had several very close matches with the level of competition being very high. The B team faced Junior Varsity opponents and won six out of their seven games.

College’s U18 and U14 football teams played for the first time in the Independent Girls School 6-a-side tournament. The U14s successfully made it through to the national final where they lost out on penalties. The U18 reached the semi-final stage and were also unlucky to go out on penalties after extra time. At the 5-a-side U14 District Tournament the side lost by one goal. The senior team continued their football journey in the ISFAG Cup competition and made it through to the semi-final stage, losing to the eventual winners, Repton.

College hosted the District Schools Swimming Championships and welcomed ten schools and over 250 swimmers. Senior Swimmer Chloe Yu led the way with two individual wins. At the South West Schools Swimming Relay Championships the U18 team finished a very creditable 8th in both medley and freestyle relays.

The Cross Country team joined forces with the newly formed CLC Striders running group and raced in the Gloucestershire league, winning the U17 team event in convincing style. At the District championships, eight girls were selected to run for the Cheltenham area in the County Championships with five progressing to the South West Finals.

Squash success continues with 2 players playing for the County, whilst the teams had an excellent run in the National Schools Squash Tournament. Playing at the National Squash Centre in Manchester the U19 team reached the finals and finished 4th in the country. The U15 side reached the quarter final stage. Both teams also won their County leagues.

A new addition to the College’s vast sports programme is Eton Fives. The team of ten SFCs played their first match against Westminster school and the club has attracted a good following from girls of all ages.

At the British Schoolgirls’ Ski Races our College teams demonstrated some fantastic skills and participated in some thrilling racing, particularly in the Parallel Slalom Knockout where both teams reached the 2nd round. Individually, Ophelia Taylor was placed 2nd in all of her races in the Child 2 Age group and Camilla Austerberry achieved a podium position of 3rd place Junior 2 in the Slalom.

College’s tennis players have had a super year, the U19 team reached the national finals of the Senior Tennis Competition and finished 8th in the country. The Aberdare Cup team of Miki Simpson, George Jeffries, Alex Shaw and Olivia Horn have qualified for Nationals Finals in July. At the Gloucestershire School Girls Doubles Tournament CLC demonstrated the depth of strength, finishing as runners-up in all three age groups. College have also been involved in Aegon Club Tennis League for all age groups and these have provided the girls with a fantastic opportunity to hone their match playing skills against very stiff opposition.

The rowers competed well at their nationals in very tough conditions. The girls rowed to the best of their ability in difficult conditions and were a credit to CLC.

At the National Girls’ Schools’ Polo Tournament the 1st Team finished an excellent third place and the 2nd Team finished in 4th place overall. The 1st team won the Division 3 National Arena Polo. Anna Rowlinson has been selected for the Pony Club team to represent England in the USA this summer and also has SUPA trials for the Young England team.
