Department Reviews

Information and Communication Technology

We had another year of very good GCSE and A level results and observe that all the girls are becoming increasingly confident in their use of ICT as an integral part of their daily lives.

A varied Saturday morning programme was offered with activities ranging from computer building to game programming, with skill review sessions offered to those new to the sixth form. The ICT department contributed to the IB lecture programme with a talk on “The Technological Singularity – towards the edge of humanity” that touched on topics as diverse as linguistic development, modern belief systems, popular culture and, of course, computer science.

A Robotics Club was run regularly where girls had the opportunity to learn programming in a practical context. After a number of challenges including maze navigation, golf and object recognition and retrieval, the sessions culminated in a hotly contested robotic sumo competition.

Staff have benefited from a diverse spread of training covering Microsoft Office 2007, the use of the latest generation of interactive whiteboards, Web2.0 technologies such as podcasting, social bookmarking, micro-blogging and web feeds such as really simple syndication.

College benefited from the introduction of a classroom of the future with an environmentally-friendly intelligent lighting system that responds automatically to the ambient light conditions.
