Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme is offered to girls in UC4 upwards at bronze, silver and gold levels and is very popular at College. The scheme is challenging and aims to encourage and stimulate enthusiasm and initiative in young people. It presents a balanced non-competitive programme of voluntary activities which encourages responsibility, self-reliance, personal discovery and perseverance.

There are four sections in the scheme: service, skill, physical recreation and the expedition. Most girls at Bronze level do a first aid certificate for the service section. Skills can involve any hobby, handicraft or pastime such as playing a musical instrument, drama or cookery. For the physical recreation section girls are encouraged to follow a different activity such as fitness training, rowing or dance. The expedition section is organised by College. During the Spring term map reading and navigation classes take place. During the Summer term, girls attend a training weekend which involves camping for a night, cooking two meals and walking in the Cotswold countryside carrying all the equipment needed to be self-sufficient.

Many girls in SFC continue the award at Gold level where the scheme consists of the four sections mentioned above as well as a residential section. Expeditions in the past year have taken place in the Brecon Beacons, the Lake District and Dartmoor and can be completed on foot, on horseback or in a canoe! At this level the scheme is very demanding as the girls have to learn about many aspects of camp craft and undergo advanced expedition training around the surrounding Cotswold countryside.
