Autumn Term Varied work, including composing founded on the study of harmony and rhythm; exploration, in greater depth of varied scales and melodic writing.
Spring Term Exploring the music of Japan and India.
Summer Term Understanding the importance of structure and form in music.
LC3
The year’s study revolves around different forms of Programmatic Music, to include: music for film, ballet, theatre, and music which seeks to evoke specific moods. Girls will listen, analyse and compose their own programmatic music.
UC4 (GCSE)
Autumn Term Studying Western Classical Music from 1600 - 1899 via prescribed works (music by Handel, Mozart and Chopin). Compositional exercises designed to teach the use of standard techniques and devices.
Spring Term Studying music in the 20th century with a focus on works by Schoenberg, Bernstein and Steve Reich. Further, more expanded compositional exercises.
Summer Term Studying world music and popular music. Commencing a full composition. Aiming to complete the performing element of the GCSE.
UC5 (GCSE)
Autumn Term Completing the principal composition task; revisiting the Areas of Study; continuing to practise analysis techniques and listening skills.
Spring Term Composing a work from a given brief, published by the examination board.
Summer Term Revising the five areas of study, ahead of the listening examination.
SFC 1 (AS) Learning to harmonise melodies in various styles and eras; composing an original work for between 4 and 10 instruments; giving a short recital and performing as part of an ensemble; preparing for a listening examination via two areas of study, each with prescribed works: The 18th and early 19th Century Orchestra; Jazz 1920-60. The overarching themes for the year’s work are: The Language of Western Tonal Harmony and The Expressive Use of Instruments.
SFC 2 (A2) Completing stylistic technique exercises from a chosen topic; creating a more substantial composition; presenting a full recital; studying music from a choice of set topics, each with prescribed works. The overarching themes for this year’s work are: Tonality and Interpretation.
