Curriculum Summaries

History of Art

History of Art is studied at AS/A2 level only.

It provides an opportunity to develop an awareness of how history has shaped our culture in the Western World and is available for girls who wish to extend and broaden their curriculum studies. As a discipline it helps develop communication skills, critical thinking and the ability to argue and reason, both orally and in writing. It can provide a useful and pertinent complement to other subjects such as history, art, classical civilisation, modern languages and religious studies.

SFC1

Girls are introduced to the subject through a study of Visual analysis of works of art and architecture in Unit 1 and through a thematic approach to the art and architecture of the Western World in Unit 2.

Periods studied include Classical antiquity, the Renaissance in Italy and Modern art in the 20th century.

Themes include the subjects in art, styles and techniques, patronage and the changing status of the artist.

SFC2

Students build on the knowledge gained at AS level and study two periods in Western Art in greater depth.

The topic for study in Unit 3 is Art and Architecture in Fifteenth Century Europe and includes a study of the art of Italy, Flanders and France in this period.

The topic for study in Unit 4 is Art and Architecture in Twentieth Century Europe and America 1900-1945.
