LC1 Students experience anintroduction to the basic elements and techniques of drama and theatre; preparation and performance of a piece of choral speaking for the Cheltenham Competitive Festival (Summer Term); Mime; Story-Telling; improvisation.
LC2 Students cover the following topics: Themed improvisation; Types of Stages; Theatre vocabulary; Elizabethan theatre and Drama in Advertising.
LC3 The LC3 Drama option includes the study and performance of scenes from a variety of plays, as well as the creation of the girls’ own drama through improvisations, in which they learn a variety of dramatic techniques.
The function of the role of director is studied and implemented in the girls’ own work, and the importance of the technical aspects of Theatre, such as set design, lighting, costume and make-up, is also studied. The girls are able to understand the concept of theatrical design through the use of new computer software – Media Stage.
The girls also study theatre history focussing particularly on Greek Theatre using a well known Greek play as their stimulus.
UC4 & 5 – EDEXCEL SYLLABUS - UNIT 1: DRAMA EXPLORATION I - This unit of coursework is concerned with the use of Drama to explore ideas and issues in response to stimulus material selected from different times and/or cultures. UNIT 2: DRAMA EXPLORATION II - This unit is concerned with the exploration of a complete and substantial play chosen by the centre. DRAMA PERFORMANCE - Externally assessed practical examination of ONE of the following options:
SFC1 (AS) – EDEXCEL SYLLABUS - UNIT 1 – Exploration of Drama and Theatre: Requires the analysis of two play texts through exploration and study to gain an understanding of how plays are structured and interpreted.
UNIT 2 – Theatre Text in Performance: Requires the understanding and experience gained in Unit 1 to be applied in a performance context.
SFC2 (A Level) - EDEXCEL SYLLABUS - having completed the AS level the A level is followed by two further units. Unit 3: Exploration of Dramatic Performance is an internally assessed unit requiring students to create an original and unique piece of theatre starting from stimulus material. They are also required to complete an evaluation of both the process and performance of their work. Unit 4: Theatre Text in Context is an externally assessed unit taking the form of a two and a half hour written examination paper. There are three sections to the paper: in A and B one play should be studied and explored from the point of view of a director from a choice of three set texts. In section C a selection must be made from three historic periods of theatre history. A live performance of a play from the chosen period must be experienced and evaluated and a comparison made with the original staging conditions of the play.

This course is designed to encourage students to examine theatre in its diversity of forms around the world through critical study of the theory, history and culture of theatre and through expression in workshops, devised work and scripted performance. Students will come to understand that the act of imagining, creating, presenting and critically reflecting on theatre in its past and present contexts embodies the individual and social need to investigate and find explanations for the world around us.
