Design and Technology is offered through two routes, Food Technology and Textiles Technology.
Lower College
All pupils in LC1 and LC2 study both subjects. In LC3 it is an option but the majority of pupils continue with the subject. In each year open ended design briefs are set to enable pupils to become independent learners and excel to their full potential.
LC1 In Textiles Technology the set theme is ‘Save our Planet’. Pupils are challenged to design and make a creative and unique patchwork cushion using only scraps of fabric.
In Food Technology pupils are taught basic nutrition and how to choose a balanced diet. They experience the use of a wide range of equipment and tools when designing and making a range of food products.
LC2 Pupils study two modules in Textiles Technology. One module requires the pupils to design and make an eco-friendly designer bag to replace the plastic shopping carrier bag. The second module allows the pupils to create and make a fabric fashion item of jewellery.
In Food Technology the theme is a ‘Cyber Cafe’. Pupils are set the task to design and make a range of healthy and nutritious food products that would be suitable to be sold in the ‘Cyber Cafe’.
LC3 The pupils, in Textiles, are set a design brief to design and make a pair of pyjama/leisurewear pants using and adapting a commercial pattern.
In Food Technology pupils are challenged to research, plan and produce a range of food products suitable for a teenager’s party.
