Higher Education
After receiving a fabulous set of A Level and IB results, 92% of The Cheltenham Ladies’ College Leavers of 2012 will go on to attend their firm choice of university. Furthermore, 90% of our students accepting offers from UK universities will be studying at Russell Group universities, with a further 5% attending 1994 Group universities.
Nineteen girls have left us to attend American or Canadian universities, with places being taken up at universities including Yale, Harvard, Princeton (two), Columbia, University of Chicago (two), Stanford, NYU (two), Georgetown and McGill. This year girls applying to the US received excellent offers from a large number of universities, including seven offers from Ivy League institutions. Indeed, over the last three years, girls have received 17 offers from all eight Ivy League universities, in addition to such universities as Stanford, MIT, Johns Hopkins, University of California Berkeley, Georgetown, UCLA, University of Chicago, Georgia Tech, Cornell, Duke and NYU. Girls regularly receive scholarship offers.
There are 18 girls who have gone on to study Medicine, with one taking up a place at Cambridge; seven at UCL, KCL and Imperial; one at Trinity College, Dublin; three at Hong Kong University and two at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Two girls are taking up places for Veterinary Medicine in the UK and one is going on to study Dentistry. A comprehensive Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science programme is run in college to support applicants in these areas, and 34 offers were received by college girls applying to these subjects. These offers comprised 28 for Medicine, two for Dentistry and four for Veterinary Science.
Over the last three years, 56 CLC girls have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge. In the autumn of 2012 four linguists will start their studies: two in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and one in Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge, and one in French and Spanish at Oxford. We have three Chemists taking up places at Oxford, giving us a 100% the success rate for applications to the course. Furthermore three girls will go on to study Law (two at Cambridge and one at Oxford), and two will read PPE at Oxford. This year, as last, we have had a student turn down a place at Cambridge to attend Princeton.
We are delighted also to note the variety of courses for which girls are successful in gaining places. 2012 Leavers will be studying subjects as varied as Animation; Architecture; Building Surveying; Engineering; English; History of Art; Mathematics; Music; Philosophy; Russian; Sport, Coaching and Physical Education; Spanish; and Theology.
These outcomes follow a particularly good year for higher education applications. Of all applications to UK universities, the offer rate was 70% - our best in recent years. Girls apply for a huge range of subjects and each individual is supported in making their application by a team comprising their tutor, a subject-specific mentor, the US University Adviser (if relevant), the Head of Sixth Form College and the Professional Guidance Centre team. This year successful applications have been made across all faculty areas.
Some of the highlights of our offer rates for all subjects include:
- Bath 92%
- Bristol 75%
- Edinburgh 63%
- Exeter 91%
- Imperial 70%
- KCL 74%
- Sheffield 100%
- UCL 67%
- Warwick 88%
- York 90%
Our Oxbridge offers were strong this year too, with 26 girls receiving an offer.
